Our Founder & Spirituality

St. Norbert of Xanten (1080–1134)
St. Norbert was born into a noble family in Xanten, Germany, enjoying wealth and influence in his youth. His life changed dramatically after surviving a violent storm, leading him to a deep conversion and a radical choice to dedicate himself fully to God.

In 1120, he founded the Order of Prémontré (the Norbertines), in Prémontré, France, based on the Rule of St. Augustine. This order combined the contemplative life of prayer with the active life of pastoral ministry. The Norbertines lived in community, shared their goods, celebrated the Eucharist daily, and were committed to preaching the Gospel and serving the poor.

Life in the Eucharist

Living in Community

"Prepared for Every
Good Work"

(2 Tim 3:17) – The motto of the Norbertines calls us to live a life rooted in the Eucharist, strengthened in community, and dedicated to the service of the Gospel.

Our Ministries

Our mission flows from a life rooted in prayer and community. Through pastoral care, education, social service, and mission outreach, we bring Christ’s presence to parishes, schools, and communities. Whether in India or abroad, the Norbertines are committed to renewing faith, uplifting the poor, and building a more compassionate world.

Social Work

The Norbertines reach out to the poor, the sick, and the marginalised with compassion. Through charitable initiatives and community service, we bring Christ’s love to those most in need.

Education

Education is at the heart of our mission. From schools to catechesis, we form young minds and hearts, nurturing values of faith, knowledge, and service for the future of society.

Pastoral Care

Serving parishes through liturgy, sacraments, and spiritual guidance, strengthening faith communities.

Mission Outreach

Our mission extends beyond boundaries, from local villages to distant regions of India and abroad in parishes, missions, and social apostolates.

Our Catalogue

It was in the year 1978, under the initiative of Abbot Wolf Gang Bohm the Norbertines of the Stift Tepl in Villingen came to Mananthavady with the help of Bishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, then bishop of Mananthavady. The new community in Mananthavady sprouted and grew rapidly under the care and concern of Abbot Böhm.

The good will and concern of bishop Thoomkuzhy have significantly contributed o the growth of Mananthavady Norbertines. However, as the numbers of German confreres were decreasing substantially, the only solution was to send confreres from India to…

Our Journey

The Norbertines of Mananthavady trace their roots to 1978, when the confreres of the Stift Tepl Abbey in Villingen, Germany, came to Wayanad with the encouragement of Bishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, then Bishop of Mananthavady. Under the guidance of Abbot Wolfgang Böhm, the first community took root and grew steadily in the hills of Kerala.

From those humble beginnings, the Mananthavady Norbertines have flourished into a vibrant community of priests and brothers serving across India and abroad. Our life is centered on the Eucharist, lived in fraternity, and expressed in service through parishes, schools, social apostolates, and missions.

Formation & Vocation

The path of a Norbertine begins with formation – a journey of prayer, study, and community life. At Mananthavady, candidates are guided step by step to grow in faith, discern their calling, and prepare for a life dedicated to God’s service.

Rooted in the Eucharist and the Rule of St. Augustine, our formation shapes young men into priests and brothers committed to pastoral ministry, education, and mission.

Is God calling you to this way of life? The Norbertine Fathers invite you to explore your vocation and walk with us in fraternity and service, following the vision of St. Norbert.

Our Communities

The Norbertine Fathers of Mananthavady live and serve in vibrant communities across India and abroad. Rooted in prayer and fraternity, each house is a center of faith, service, and mission.
