Our Founder

Rooted in prayer and service, our communities follow the vision of St. Norbert – bringing Christ’s light to every corner of the world.

St. Norbert of Xanten

St. Norbert of Xanten was born in 1080 in Xanten, Germany, into a noble family. In his early years, he lived a comfortable life filled with wealth and luxury. He served in the court of Emperor Henry V, enjoying all the privileges of the nobility. However, Norbert’s life took a dramatic turn when he narrowly survived a violent storm while riding his horse. This life-changing event led him to reflect on his life and make a radical decision to devote himself to God.

The Birth of the Norbertine Order

Norbert became a priest and chose a life of simplicity and humility. In 1120, he founded a religious order known as the Norbertine Order, or the Premonstratensians, in Prémontré, France, based on the rule of St. Augustine. The order is unique because it combined monastic life with pastoral ministry. Norbertines lived in community, shared their possessions, and dedicated themselves to serving the poor, preaching the Gospel, and guiding people toward God.

Norbert’s Mission and Leadership

Norbert became known for his powerful preaching and his dedication to reforming the Church. His words and example attracted many followers to his new Order. On July 25, 1126, he was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, where he worked tirelessly to defend the Church from political interference and supported Pope Innocent II against the anti-pope Anacletus II.

The Legacy of St. Norbert

St. Norbert passed away in 1134, but his mission and vision continue to inspire people across the world. The Norbertine Order he founded remains active today, with members devoted to prayer, community living, and service. For over 900 years, Norbertines have carried forward the spirit of their founder — living lives of faith, unity, and dedication to God’s people.
